How AI Engines Actually Rank and Recommend Brands
We ran thousands of buyer-intent queries across five AI engines to understand what makes them mention one brand over another. Here's what we learned.
1. Training data presence
AI engines mention brands they've seen frequently in their training data. Consistent mentions across reputable sources — news, reviews, documentation — dramatically increase the odds of being recommended.
2. Citation authority
Engines with web access (like Perplexity) heavily weight authoritative, recent sources. Brands with strong third-party coverage appear more often and are described more accurately.
3. Clarity of positioning
Brands with a clear, well-articulated value proposition are easier for AI to categorize and recommend for specific use cases. Vague positioning leads to omission.
The takeaway: AEO isn't a hack. It's about building a clear, well-documented, authoritatively-covered brand presence that AI engines can confidently surface.
